Approximate pupillary distance
Instant free measurement using your webcam or photo. Ideal for a quick standard estimate similar to other online tools. For higher precision, we recommend our "Precise pupillary distance" tool.
FreePrecise pupillary distance
Highly-accurate method using a standard-sized card reference (credit card, ID card, etc.) that you hold on your forehead for comparison. Precision to 1 mm.
PremiumOC height (Segment height)
Measure the ocular center height for your glasses frames, once you know your pupillary distance.
PremiumOur premium tools
Precise PD
Millimeter-accurate pupillary distance, corrected for parallax and convergence.
OC height
Frame-specific ocular center height for perfectly aligned lenses.
Why choose PupiMetric?
🔬 Unmatched precision
Unlike other tools using a card as a size reference, PupiMetric accounts for parallax and eye convergence. It doesn't just measure pixels; it reconstructs the 3D geometry of your face for the highest accuracy.
🎯 Smart adaptation
You don't have just one PD. Your PD varies with your usage. PupiMetric automatically adapts your measurements for far vision, reading/computer work, or VR headsets to ensure perfect visual comfort.
Tested against the competition
We tested PupiMetric against the most popular online PD measurement apps. Here are the results.
Error distribution of measurements. Closer to 0 is better.
PupiMetric: 100% of measurements within ±1 mm of an optician reference. Best competitor: 50%.
The science behind the perfect fit
The importance of pupillary distance
Ophthalmologists and optometrists don't always provide your Pupillary Distance (PD), also known as inter-pupillary distance or IPD. This data is crucial for horizontally centering the optical center of your lenses to match your eyes.
Crucially, your PD is not a single constant value. It changes based on focus distance: A "far PD" is needed for general use (driving, walking), while a "near PD" is required for reading or computer glasses compared to distance vision.
Similarly, for Virtual Reality (VR) headsets, matching the lens spacing to your IPD is essential.
If this parameter is incorrect, you could suffer from eye strain, double vision, and headaches.
PupiMetric allows you to measure this distance with millimeter precision, taking into account the natural convergence of your eyes, the effects of parallax, and your specific type of usage.
Why OC height matters
Ocular center height (OC height) is also a vital measurement, as it governs the vertical position of the optical center. If this parameter is correctly adjusted, you will see clearly in all directions. Conversely, if you enter incorrect values when ordering, your vision may be blurry.
An alternative to the pupillometer
To measure these parameters correctly, opticians use a device called a pupillometer. Unfortunately, accurate self-measurement without specialized tools is difficult.
That's why PupiMetric offers a simple and precise solution directly from your home, so you can order your glasses with peace of mind.
